Pseudomonas aeruginosa rhamnolipids disperse Bordetella bronchiseptica biofilms.

We have previously reported that the respiratory pathogen Bordetella bronchiseptica can form biofilms in vitro. In this report, we demonstrate the disruption of B. bronchiseptica biofilms by rhamnolipids secreted from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This suggests that biosurfactants such as rhamnolipids may be utilized as antimicrobial agents for removing Bordetella biofilms.

Improved Production of Rhamnolipids by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa Mutant

A Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutant derived by random mutagenesis with N-methyl-N¢-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, producing high levels of the rhamnolipid biosurfactants was selected on Siegmund-Wagner (SW) plates. The mutant designated P. aeruginosa PTCC1637 produces rhamnolipids at concentrations 10 time more than parent strain. NMR analysis and surface tension measurement showed that the biosurfactan...

Biosynthesis of Stable Antioxidant ZnO Nanoparticles by Pseudomonas aeruginosa Rhamnolipids

During the last several years, various chemical methods have been used for synthesis of a variety of metal nanoparticles. Most of these methods pose severe environmental problems and biological risks; therefore the present study reports a biological route for synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles using Pseudomonas aeruginosa rhamnolipids (RLs) (denoted as RL@ZnO) and their antioxidant property....

Rhamnolipids modulate swarming motility patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is capable of twitching, swimming, and swarming motility. The latter form of translocation occurs on semisolid surfaces, requires functional flagella and biosurfactant production, and results in complex motility patterns. From the point of inoculation, bacteria migrate as defined groups, referred to as tendrils, moving in a coordinated manner capable of sensing and respon...

Excretions/Secretions from Bacteria-Pretreated Maggot Are More Effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms

BACKGROUND Sterile larvae--maggots of the green bottle blowfly Lucilia sericata are employed as a treatment tool for various types of chronic wounds. Previous studies reported that excretions/secretions (ES) of the sterile larvae could prevent and remove the biofilms of various species of bacteria. In the present study we assessed the effect of ES from the larvae pretreated with Pseudomonas aer...
